Statement from Michael Witmore, Director of the Folger Shakespeare Library
Aug 16, 2017

The Folger Shakespeare Library, a part of Amherst College, joins President Biddy Martin’s eloquent condemnation of the views and recent actions of white supremacists and other groups who preach hatred of nonwhite people and religious minorities. Our collections, spanning history from the Renaissance onward, and our educational and public programs support the value of pluralism and an open society in which all people contribute and all are treated with respect. We reject as utterly false the view that European and global history teach the superiority of any race. As custodians of an important part of that history, we join other cultural institutions in firmly rejecting that view and reminding the United States of America and the world that this country’s greatness is the work of many peoples.
